A long-term vision for the EU's rural areas
Although the report is generally positive, I voted against it because it contains proposals that jeopardize the survival of large carnivores, such as the wolf, by changing the protection status of these animals. The killing of wolves is already possible under the current protection status, with a range of support measures available to member states under EU funds (particularly the CAP and LIFE+), as well as compensation for losses. Strengthening this support and boosting local and transnational cooperation for more efficient and appropriate management of large carnivores are necessary solutions to the situation of affected farmers. Changing the protection status of wolves is not. In fact, although the wolf population is now stable in some EU regions, changing their protection status at EU level would have potentially devastating consequences in several regions, particularly those where wolf populations have not yet reached acceptable values.
