70 MEPs concerned about the environmental crisis on the Galician coast due to the spillage of micro pellets
Brussels, January 30, 2024 - 70 Members of the European Parliament, including Francisco Guerreiro, have sent a letter to the European Commission expressing their collective concern about the environmental crisis on the Galician coast due to the spillage of plastic micro pellets.
In the letter they detail their deep concern over the unprecedented arrival of 26 tons of plastic micro pellets, which is leading to a developing catastrophe with serious implications for the local ecosystem and fishing communities in Galicia and other European territories.
They call on the European Commission for its immediate attention to this matter and “believe that urgent action at European level is imperative to address and mitigate the environmental impact of this crisis and future crises.”
MEPs call for the implementation of an ambitious review of the EU's maritime safety package and urge co-legislators to adopt the new proposal for a regulation on microplastic pollution from pellet losses, which includes maritime transport.
