Portugal Postsen: 'Reception of refugees at the center of the debate in Coimbra'

MEPs expect uniform policy for migrants.

Portuguese MEPs Maria Manuel Leitão Marques (PS), Marisa Matias (BE) and Lídia Pereira (PSD) defend a review of the reception of refugees, following the war in Ukraine, calling for a greater consensus between the reception and integration of refugees from from all over the world apart from the Ukrainians. Also in the aftermath of the war, independent MEP Francisco Guerreiro regrets the European Union’s high energy dependence on the Russian Federation. The four elements were this Tuesday at the initiative “The European Parliament at your door”, which ends tomorrow in Coimbra, in Praça da República.

Despite praising the reception of refugees from Ukraine in European Union countries, Marisa Matias hopes that this policy will be extended to all refugees, which, she understands, “is not happening”.

Socialist MEP Maria Manuel Leitão Marques recalls that before the war started in Ukraine, “there were already many refugees at the gates of Europe”. She would like there to be greater consensus on reception policy, but she says she is not sure that will happen.

Lídia Pereira is concerned about what is happening in Poland, where families are hosting refugees and not the government. “We are not only talking about reception but also integration. This can be a “time bomb” in terms of cases of human trafficking”, warns the PSD MEP.

Francisco Guerreiro focuses his concerns on the high energy and agri-food dependence of the conflict zone. “Unfortunately, we continue to finance the war in Ukraine. We should have been moving towards a situation of energy independence a long time ago”, considers the independent deputy.
