Plenary Session: The Rule of Law in Malta, after the recent revelations around the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia
The Rule of Law in Malta, after the recent revelations around the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia (B9-0240/2019)
I voted in favour of this resolution because the Maltese people deserve our full support and solidarity in defending their right to live in a country based on the rule of law.
This resolution, an initiative of the Group of the Greens in the European Parliament, stems from the recent revelations regarding the murder of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
In recent weeks, people very close to Prime Minister Joseph Muscat have resigned and have been directly implicated in the murder. The Prime Minister has announced that he will resign in January.
In recent years, the Commission has refrained from taking any concrete measures against the Maltese government, despite repeated calls from the European Parliament. With this resolution, we call on the new Commission to start dialogue with the Maltese government without delay within the framework of the rule of law.
The European Commission can no longer pretend that it does not see the culture of impunity with regard to money laundering and corruption in Malta, where the case of selling Maltese passports is a stark violation of the obligation of sincere cooperation between Member States.
