Plenary Session: The illegal trade in companion animals in the EU
The illegal trade in companion animals in the EU (B9-0088/2020)
I voted in favour of the resolution that calls on the Commission to develop effective legislation for the protection of pets, as the current legislative framework has been unable to guarantee their health and well-being, especially with regard to their (illegal) trade.
It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats are bred and transported in poor conditions each year to be sold illegally in different EU countries. This practice takes advantage of current legislative gaps, calling into question the welfare of these animals, the smooth functioning of the EU's internal market and consumer protection.
This resolution calls for the EU to develop awareness campaigns to encourage the adoption of dogs and cats through animal rescue centers instead of their purchase, recognizes that identification and registration are essential components in stray animal management, and calls on the Commission and the Member States to take action to ban breeding and marketing practices that are detrimental to the health, well-being and behavioural development of pets.
