Plenary Session: The Anti-racism protests following the death of George Floyd
The Anti-racism protests following the death of George Floyd (B9-0194/2020, B9-0195/2020, B9-0196/2020, B9-0197/2020)
I voted in favour of this resolution as it is an important sign of condemnation of all forms of racism, hatred and violence. With this, we reiterate that there is no place for racism and discrimination in our societies and we ask the European Union (EU) to take a strong and decisive position internally and externally.
We strongly condemn the death of George Floyd in the United States of America, as well as similar deaths in other parts of the world. In addition, we ask the US authorities to address structural racism and inequalities, and we rise against police actions towards peaceful protesters and journalists as well as against President Donald Trump's “fiery” speech.
We emphasize that cases of police brutality and abuse must not go unpunished and that citizens have the right to record scenes of police violence to use as evidence.
This text also calls on the EU and its Member States to end the racial and ethnic profile in the application of criminal law, in anti-terrorist measures, and in immigration controls. In this sense, technologies in this field should not discriminate against racial and/or ethnic minorities.
