Plenary Session: Setting up an ANIT Committee of Inquiry
Setting up a committee of inquiry to investigate alleged contraventions and maladministration in the application of Union law in relation to the protection of animals during transport within and outside the Union, and defining its responsibilities, numerical strength and term of office (B9-0191/2020)
I voted in favour of creating a committee of inquiry to investigate the transport of live animals within the European Union and to third countries because this is a profoundly serious problem worldwide, which has major negative consequences for animal welfare and for the confidence citizens place in European institutions in terms of their ability to protect animals.
In the past parliamentary term, the European Parliament agreed, through an implementation report on the transport of live animals, that this committee of inquiry is necessary (2018/2110 (INI), point 22). In addition, according to the Commission's audit reports, for example the 2019-6835 report, there is widespread disregard for legislation that protects animals during transport ((EC) 1/2005).
The investigative work of several NGOs has served to expose the tragic reality of live animal transport and to corroborate conclusions such as those in the abovementioned report. Having obtained a large majority of votes in favour, I now hope that the committee of inquiry will contribute to structural legislative changes concerning animal protection.
