Plenary Session: Setting up a special committee on artificial intelligence
Setting up a special committee on artificial intelligence in a digital age, its responsibilities, numerical strength and term of office (B9-0189/2020)
In line with the Group of the Greens/EFA, I chose to abstain from voting on the creation of a special committee on artificial intelligence in a digital age. While agreeing that it is essential to ensure that the digital transition is human-centered and consistent with the European Union's Declaration of Fundamental Rights; and that the use of artificial intelligence poses significant challenges, such as the protection of personal data and the right to privacy, I consider the scope of this new committee to be very broad and, consequently, I was unable to support its creation. The proposal contained too many references to digitization as a whole, instead of focusing on the issue of artificial intelligence. In addition, I am also concerned about the possible duplication of work already underway in the permanent committees, such as IMCO, ITRE, JURI, CULT and LIBE.
