Plenary Session: Recommendations on the negotiations for a new partnership with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Recommendations on the negotiations for a new partnership with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (A9-0117/2020 - Kati Piri, Christophe Hansen)
I voted in favour of this resolution on the negotiations for a new EU-UK partnership because we are interested in a relationship as strong as possible with the United Kingdom, based on common values and a level-playing field that does not accommodate any kind of lowering of standards or social, environmental, or economic dumping.
The European Parliament reiterated its willingness to make rapid progress in implementing the Withdrawal Agreement and the Northern Ireland Protocol as it is a precondition for any future partnership.
The EP deplores the UK Government's lack of political will to agree to an ambitious and comprehensive partnership based on the political declaration agreed by both at Brexit.
A global trade agreement with zero tariffs and quotas can only exist on the condition that there is zero social, environmental, and fiscal dumping. We also want to ensure that the rights of EU and UK citizens and their families are fully protected, including those relating to Social Security and residence.
If the UK so wishes, we are also available to accept an extension of the period for the transitional period. If this does not happen, it is urgent to prepare a plan for an exit without agreement.
