Plenary Session: Implementation of National Roma Integration Strategies: combating negative attitudes towards people with Romani background in Europe
Implementation of National Roma Integration Strategies: combating negative attitudes towards people with Romani background in Europe
I voted in favour of this report for underlining the importance of implementing a legally binding instrument that promotes the principles of equality, inclusion, and participation with respect to Roma communities, since they are in a context marked by fragile socio-economic conditions, several limitations on access to quality education, and tremendous difficulties in being a part of the labour market, which degenerates into enormous levels of exposure to unemployment and precarious employment.
Such a situation hinders an effective social inclusion and the exit from a situation of poverty, to which one can also add a meager access to health care, which in turn results in quite high levels of mortality and a shorter life expectancy.
Therefore, the European institutions must strive to adopt procedures and instruments that promote the integration of this community, ensuring their social inclusion and, consequently, increasing the quality of life of these people.
