Plenary Session: Global data collection system for ship fuel oil consumption data
Global data collection system for ship fuel oil consumption data (A9-0144/2020 - Jutta Paulus)
I voted in favour of this report because we urgently need mandatory measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from maritime transports.
The European maritime transport sector is responsible for close to a fifth of global emissions from maritime transport and accounted for around 13% of the EU's global emissions in the transport sector in 2015. The development of ships whose emissions are low or zero would bring important benefits for health and the environment. However, this sector remains the only one not to be expressly covered by any emission reduction policy in the EU.
This report contains very positive proposals, namely the mandatory linear reduction of at least 40% less GHG emissions per transport operation by 2030, the extension of the EU Emissions Trading (ETS) to EU shipping from 2022 , the creation of an “Oceanic Fund” to improve the energy efficiency of ships and support investments to decarbonize maritime transport, to be financed from the revenues generated by the CELE. 20% of the Fund's revenues should also be used to protect and restore marine ecosystems.
