Plenary Session: Fisheries Partnership Agreement between the EU and São Tomé and Príncipe
Protocol on the implementation of the Fisheries Partnership Agreement between São Tomé and Príncipe and the European Community (A9-0001/2020 - Nuno Melo)
I voted in favour of this fisheries partnership agreement with the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe.
This agreement provides for 840,000 euros per year in payments by the European Union (4.2 million euros for the agreement as a whole), of which more than 50%, or 440,000 euros, will be used as sectoral support for the development of the São Tomé's national fisheries sector. The agreement will also contribute to the governance of the oceans in an area where protocols with two other neighbouring countries are dormant (Gabon and Equatorial Guinea).
The European Commission will support the development of national fisheries, carry out scientific assessments and the fight against illegal fishing, as well as ensure that the local population has sufficient marine resources for a sustainable exploitation.
The EU must, however, ensure that local qualified personnel are hired and trained for this scientific research and monitoring work.
