EU-Belarus Agreement on readmission of persons residing without authorisation (A9-0097/2020 - Petar Vitanov)
I voted against, along with the Greens/EFA, because we have consistently demanded decent human rights-compatible return procedures and criticized the principle that the conclusion of a readmission agreement must be a precondition for improving the visa system. That said, it is understood that the impact on the fundamental rights of people who will return to Belarus under this agreement was not assessed before its conclusion.
Therefore, I am particularly concerned about the lack of procedures to monitor compliance with fundamental rights, to ensure that persons are not returned -or chain-returned - to countries where they may be at risk of persecution.
