Plenary session: Election of the Commission
Election of the Commission
European Greens, myself included, abstained from voting for the College of Commissioners of the new Commission because we do not write “blank checks” when there is no clear commitment on certain matters. However, since it is a European project and with interesting commitments for the next 5 years, we did not want to close the door to negotiations.
Despite Ursula von der Leyen's promises that this would be a Climate Commission, the lack of visible changes in the CAP and CFP proposals, without which it will be impossible to implement a successful Green New Deal, demonstrates that there is a lot to negotiate.
We remain concerned about some choices for Commissioners, namely those appointed by Hungary, France and Croatia, and we are critical of the connection of migration policy with the title of Commissioner for the “Promotion of the European lifestyle”.
In spite of all these issues, we keep the door open to solving a considerable number of challenges, namely combating climate change, the just expansion of a new digital age, the deepening of the European project and the guarantee that Europe fights populism and remains as a leading entity in human, social, labour and environmental rights.
