Plenary Session: Conference on the Future of Europe
Conference on the Future of Europe (B9-0170/2020, B9-0179/2020)
I voted in favour of the resolution that urges the Council to come forward with a position on the format and organization of the Conference, with a view to ensuring that the voices of citizens are heard.
The resolution stresses that citizens' opinions must be at the center of the political debate regarding issues internal and external to the European Union (EU) and which are not necessarily provided for in the Lisbon Treaty. In addition, it says the Covid-19 virus further underlines the need for the EU to politically and institutionally reform various areas of governance, a need that has long been felt.
The resolution regrets that the Council has not yet taken a position and calls on the Council and the Commission to enter negotiations as soon as possible in order to reach a final agreement before the end of the summer.
