Plenary session: 2020 budgetary procedure, joint text
2020 budgetary procedure: joint text (A9-0035/2019 - Monika Hohlmeier, Eider Gardiazabal Rubial)
I voted in favour of approving the European Union budget for 2020 because this is a good document, also the result of a great deal of work by the European Parliament in its negotiations with the European Council. We managed to include an extra 500 million euros for investments in climate protection and 78 million for combating youth unemployment and for the Erasmus program.
However, Parliament suffered a defeat, despite the great support of the majority political groups, as it was unable to guarantee a specific budget line for rescue at sea, mainly to support those who aid in operations in the Mediterranean Sea. The opposition of the European Commission and the Member States prevented this initiative, originally advanced by the European Greens.
Despite this, this budget is the most “green” ever in the history of the European Union and will allow to safeguard very important investments in the fight against climate change and in the social protection of Europeans.
