PAN wants more investment on climate measures in the European Green Deal
Brussels, 12 December 2019- PAN and the European Greens called on the European Commission for more investment in measures directly related to the climate and a clear European strategy around 100% clean and renewable energies. The request took place during the presentation of the European Green Deal, by the president of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen.
The Greens called for the trade agreements to be linked to the goals of the Paris Agreement, namely the recent European Union agreement with Mercosur, for the most polluting activities to pay the Just Transition Fund bill, for the end of direct and indirect subsidies to industries based on fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to be restructured, thus protecting biodiversity and extensive modes of food production, and for the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2021-2027 to have at least 50% of its funds directly related to climate actions and policies, instead of the mere 25% proposed by the European Commission.
“European Greens also want more firmness in climate goals and we urge that a 65% reduction in greenhouse gases be achieved by 2030 and that carbon neutrality be achieved in 2040, 10 years before the European Commission’s proposal,” says Francisco Guerreiro, PAN MEP.
In the same plenary session, a proposal by the European Greens to discuss in January a recommendation by the European Parliament on the commitments to be taken by the Commission for this Green Deal was also approved.
“This European Green Deal is the result of pressure from civil society and the millions of Europeans who want climate action and an economy that works for responsible development,” said the MEP. “This Pact will not be effective unless binding climate measures are introduced in international trade policy and unless we rethink the CAP and the Emission Trading System,” concludes Francisco Guerreiro.
