MEPs call for sanctions on Morocco for breaking ceasefire in Guerguerat
Brussels, 13 November 2020 – Members of the Intergroup for Western Sahara in the European Parliament warned in a letter thar Morocco broke the ceasefire - an agreement signed more than thirty years ago under the auspices of the United Nations (UN) - in the area of Guerguerat, in Western Sahara, close to the border with Mauritania.
After the illegal construction of a road between Morocco and Mauritania, “dozens of Saharawis have been peacefully protesting in the Guerguerat area since 21 October to protest against this illegal passage and against the violation of the peace agreement and the constant violation of human rights suffered by the Saharawi people by the Moroccan occupation forces,”reads the letter.
In response, Morocco sent military forces against Sahrawi civilians and the Sahrawi army responded to defend its population.
The signatories of this letter sent to the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, calls on the European Union to condemn “the unilateral actions of Morocco and work for a peaceful solution in line with international law and the respect for Sahrawi sovreignty”.
