Greens/EFA MEP demands end to farm animal cages
Brussels, 2 October 2020 – MEP Francisco Guerreiro (Greens/EFA) urges the European Commission (EC) to phase out the use of cages for farm animals.
The letter was sent to Vice-President Timmermans and Commissioners Kyriakides and Wojciechowski, by a group of MEPs from the Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals.
The Intergroup’s request coincides with the reception, by the EC, of 1.4 million verified signatures from all across the European Union within the framework of the ‘End the Cage Age’ European Citizens’ Initiative.
The initiative, supported by over 170 organisations from across the EU, calls on the ban of all cages for farmed animals: laying hens, rabbits, sows, calves, quail, ducks, geese, pullets and broiler breeders.
