Francisco Guerreiro calls for international investigation of Navalny poisoning
Brussels, 4 September 2020 - MEP Francisco Guerreiro (Greens/EFA) sent an open letter to the Council Presidency of the European Union and the Vice-President of the European Commission to request an international investigation into the poisoning of Alexey Navalny.
After the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny on 20 August, several members of the European Parliament came together in an appeal for an EU Human Rights Violation Sanction Mechanism to be established in order to hold accountable the people behind attacks against opposition figures and journalists.
“We all look back at a long history of Putin opponents and independent journalists attacked and/or murdered and Russian authorities failing to bring to justice the real perpetrators,” the signatories write.
MEPs also call upon the two institutions to work towards an international investigation into the poisoning of Alexey Navalny within structures of the United Nations and Council of Europe with possible support of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
“We cannot stand by and watch while opposition in Russia is systematically subjected to poison attacks,” they conclude.
