End the cage age: IRN says it is working to give voice to the Portuguese
Lisbon, 31 August 2020 - The Institute of Registries and Notaries ensures that it is working to ensure that Portuguese citizens are represented in the European Citizens' Initiative ‘End The Cage Age’. This guarantee comes after a request for clarification by MEP Francisco Guerreiro (Greens/EFA) on 15 July.
At issue, the IRN’s failure to send to the European Commission the identity confirmations of the Portuguese who signed the petition to prohibit the caging of animals in livestock production. Portugal could become the only country in the European Union not to guarantee that its citizens were represented in the initiative.
The IRN president admits that the computer failure was caused by the covid-19 outbreak and guarantees that she is “placing the greatest urgency and care in the treatment of this request”.
This European Citizens' Initiative aims to ban the caging of animals in livestock production and has collected more than 1.6 million signatures across the European Union.
