Plenary Session: EU disability strategy post 2020
EU disability strategy post 2020 (B9-0123/2020)
I voted in favour of this resolution, which aims to strengthen the EU's disability strategy post-2020.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) is the first international legal instrument that sets minimum standards related to the rights of persons with disabilities. It was ratified by the EU in 2011 and by all Member States individually between 2007 and 2018 and therefore has binding powers.
The European Disability Strategy 2010-2020 has served as a framework for proposals for the implementation of the UNCRPD. However, this strategy, which will end later this year, has had little success and many people with disabilities are still deprived of basic human rights in the EU today.
The Group of the Greens took the lead in this process and coordinated this resolution, which calls on the Commission to present a new ambitious strategy which, among others, covers all provisions of the UN Convention, has ambitious and measurable objectives, reflects the diversity of people with disabilities and that allocates an adequate budget for the implementation and monitoring of the proposals presented.
