Plenary session: EU accession to the Istanbul Convention and other measures to combat gender-based violence
EU accession to the Istanbul Convention and other measures to combat gender-based violence (B9-0224/2019, B9-0225/2019, B9-0226/2019)
The favourable vote was due to the fact that there are still seven member states of the European Union that have not ratified the Istanbul Convention, an essential agreement for preventing and combating gender-based violence. In some of these countries there has been an erroneous promotion of what is contained in the Convention and it must ensure that traditions, cultures or religions cannot be used as a justification for acts of gender-based violence or violence against women.
Since gender equality is a fundamental value of the EU and the rights to equal treatment and non-discrimination are fundamental rights enshrined in the Treaties and the Charter of Fundamental Rights, the EU's application for accession to this convention by all Member States cannot be despised.
It is also added that the elimination of violence against women is a first step towards achieving full gender equality between men and women, something that no country has yet achieved.
