Greens/EFA MEP urges that unmarried bi-national couples be allowed to meet
Brussels, 6 July 2020 - MEP Francisco Guerreiro (Greens/EFA) urges the Council Presidency of the European Union (EU) - now in the hands of Germany - to suspend the travel ban for unmarried bi-national couples.
Due to the outbreak of Covid-19 and the closing of the EU’s external borders, many couples did not have a chance to see each other for months and, not being married, still can’t meet.
“Travelling for love is not tourism”, say the signatories of a letter sent to EU Council President, Horst Seehofer, to safeguard that Member States act in respect of Articles 2(2) and 3(2) of Directive 2004/38/EC; which allows also unmarried partners in a stable relationship to travel to their partner, provided that they are tested negatively for Covid-19.
On 2 July, the Commissioner for Home Affairs also made a similar appeal urging “Member State authorities and indeed travel companies to apply as wide a definition of partnerships as possible”.
