Francisco Guerreiro calls for the freeing of the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet
Lisbon, 24 April 2020 – MEP Francisco Guerreiro (PAN) signed a letter to the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, demanding the freeing of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his disappearance.
Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was abducted by the Chinese government in 1995 and has not been seen since.
The letter is a reminder that Tibet, under Chinese control for more than 6 decades, continues to be rated as the second least free country in the world, after Syria.
The signatories urge the European Commission to call upon the Chinese government to finally ensure freedom of religion and belief in Tibet, by freeing Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, together with all Tibetan political prisoners.
